Preferred File Formats: Vector Files
We achieve the best results using vector image files—specifically .ai, .eps, or .pdf. Vector files are resolution-independent, meaning they can be resized without losing quality. The software simply re-plots the coordinates of the image’s elements, maintaining crisp lines and sharp detail at any size.
- Examples of Vector-Based Software: Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, FreeHand
- Exporting to EPS: Most illustration programs have a proprietary file format but allow you to “Export” or “Save As” a generic .eps file. If you use any illustration program other than CorelDRAW, FreeHand, or Illustrator, please save your art in EPS format before sending it to us.
- Convert Text to Outlines: All text (fonts) must be converted to curves, paths, or outlines before submitting your files.
Unaccepted Formats (Likely to Incur Art Charges)
- Raster Files: Examples include .tif, .bmp, .jpg, .gif, .psd, .pcx, etc. While these can be good for photographs or very complex images, they’re not easily resized without losing quality. Enlarging a low-resolution raster image results in a pixelated or jagged appearance.
- Resizing & Resolution: Raster images are made up of a fixed number of pixels. Increasing the size simply enlarges each pixel, creating gaps that result in poor image quality. We can sometimes clean or convert a raster image to vector for a fee; however, starting with a vector file saves time and maintains the highest quality.
Formats We Cannot Use
We do not accept files created in word processing, page layout, or presentation programs. This includes:
- Microsoft Word
- WordPerfect
- PowerPoint
- PrintShop
- QuarkXPress
- PageMaker
These programs aren’t designed for large-scale or high-resolution output. Although we can occasionally extract embedded images, it’s a hit-or-miss process that often requires extra work.
